Dancing May Be as Good for Mental Health as the Gym

todayJune 16, 2026

Background

A 2024 University of Sydney review found that dancing can be just as effective as other exercise for mental health, and sometimes even better.
Turns out the dancefloor might be doing more for you than the gym. A 2024 University of Sydney study reviewed dozens of trials and found that dancing can be just as good as other exercise for mental health, and in some cases even better. The combination of movement, music, and release seems to be part of what makes it so effective.
Researchers point to a chemical effect as well: dancing can lower cortisol, the hormone linked to stress, while increasing dopamine and endorphins. That mix helps explain why a strong night out can leave people feeling lighter, calmer, and more emotionally recharged after the music stops.
